Hand engraving is the ancient art of decorating a piece jewellery or silverware by carving lines, shapes and letters into metal. Hand engravers may specialise – for example gun engraving, and a crest or seal for a signet ring. However, engraving can be as simple as the names on a school trophy or as complex as the precise patterns on a pair of silver vases by Alan Craxford.
