Gold – prized for the way it reflects light, neither fading nor discolouring, strong yet malleable and a favourite of jewellers and goldsmiths. The ancient Egyptians believed that gold was the metal of the sun and the metal that represented their Sun God, Ra, and therefore life itself.  To the Chinese, gold was the yang of the sun, and silver the ying of the moon. Gold leaf adorns the columns of the Goldsmiths’ Hall in London;  cloth of gold and gold braid is used in ceremonial robes; and according to the World Gold Council, gold is commonly used in dentistry, for the treatment of certain medical conditions such as Rheumatoid arthritis, and now gold compounds are being tested for the treatment of cancer.
